A dental emergency can strike without warning. Knowing what to do in the critical first minutes can save a tooth and prevent the situation from getting worse.
Knocked-Out Tooth
This is the most time-sensitive dental emergency. Pick up the tooth by the crown (never the root), rinse it gently with water if dirty (do not scrub), and try to reinsert it into the socket immediately. If reinsertion is not possible, keep the tooth moist — in milk or tucked between the cheek and gum — and get to a dental office within 30 minutes.
Severe Toothache or Swelling
Rinse with warm salt water. Take ibuprofen for pain and swelling. Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth. Cold compresses can reduce external swelling. If you have significant facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing, go to an emergency room immediately.
Cracked or Chipped Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any broken pieces if possible, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Minor chips that do not cause pain can often wait until a regular appointment; pain or significant tooth loss needs same-day care.
