Root Canals Redefined
Most appointments for patients receiving root canal treatment resemble an appointment for routine fillings with available techniques today. Our appropriate selection of anesthetic will keep you comfortable and pain-free throughout the appointment, and before you know it the procedure will be complete and you will be on your way to recovery.
With root canal treatment you also get to keep your tooth. Only a small internal portion of the tooth that is causing the infection or pain is conservatively removed, allowing your body to heal the area naturally and relieve the pain.
Signs that you may need root canal treatment include: severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discolouration of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums, or a persistent pimple on the gums.
Root Canal Treatment
Gentle Precision
At Smileworks Dental, our dentists use advanced techniques and rotary instruments to perform root canal treatment efficiently and comfortably. We numb the area thoroughly so you feel nothing during the procedure.
After the infected pulp is removed, we clean, shape, and seal the root canals to prevent reinfection. A crown is typically placed over the treated tooth to protect it and restore full function.
Do not let fear prevent you from getting the care you need. Untreated tooth infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond. Contact our Calgary dental office today if you are experiencing any of the symptoms above.

The Root Canal Procedure: What to Expect
Your root canal appointment begins with thorough local anesthesia — we make sure the area is completely numb before we begin. Once you are comfortable, we place a small rubber dam to isolate the tooth and keep the area clean and dry.
We create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using precise instruments, we remove the infected or inflamed pulp tissue and carefully clean and shape each root canal. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed.
A crown is usually recommended following root canal treatment to protect the tooth, as it can become more brittle after the procedure. Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find that a root canal is far more comfortable than they expected.

Recovery & Aftercare
It is normal to experience some tenderness in the treated area for a few days after a root canal. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually sufficient to manage any discomfort.
Avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent crown is in place. If we placed a temporary filling after the root canal, be gentle in that area and avoid sticky or hard foods.
If you experience severe pain, significant swelling, or your bite feels off after the procedure, contact us right away. These are signs that we should re-evaluate your treatment to ensure everything is progressing as it should.
