What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). It bonds into the grooves and pits of the tooth, forming a protective shield against bacteria and food particles that regular brushing often cannot reach.
How Effective Are They?
According to the CDC, sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in the back teeth, where 9 out of 10 cavities in children occur. Children without sealants are nearly three times more likely to develop cavities in the molars than children with sealants.
When Should Sealants Be Applied?
The best time to apply sealants is shortly after the permanent molars emerge — typically between ages 6 and 12. First molars usually come in around age 6, second molars around age 12. Applying sealants as soon as the teeth emerge protects them from the start of their functional life.
The Application Process
Sealant application is completely painless and takes only a few minutes per tooth. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild acid solution is applied briefly to help the sealant bond, and then the liquid sealant is painted on and cured with a special light.
