Early Signs of Gum Disease You Should Not Ignore

Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults — and the troubling part is that it often progresses silently in the early stages. Knowing what to look for can help you catch it before it causes irreversible damage.

Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums do not bleed when you brush or floss. If you regularly notice blood on your toothbrush or floss, this is one of the earliest and most common signs of gingivitis — the earliest stage of gum disease. Do not ignore it and do not assume it is just from brushing too hard.

Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums

Gums that are inflamed, appear darker red than usual, or feel sore when touched are signs that bacteria are irritating the gum tissue. This inflammation is your body's response to the bacteria in plaque and tartar that have accumulated along the gumline.

Persistent Bad Breath

Chronic bad breath that does not resolve with brushing may be a sign of gum disease. The bacteria responsible for gum disease produce sulfur compounds that cause an unpleasant odour. If good oral hygiene is not resolving your bad breath, it is time to see a dentist.

Gum Recession and Loose Teeth

As gum disease progresses, the gums can begin to pull away from the teeth (recession), making teeth appear longer. In advanced stages, the bone supporting the teeth breaks down, leading to loose teeth. These are signs of periodontitis — advanced gum disease that requires prompt professional treatment.
