What Are Refinements?
Refinements are additional sets of Invisalign aligners made after you have completed your initial treatment plan. They address teeth that did not move exactly as predicted or that need further adjustment to achieve the ideal final result. They are produced using new digital scans and require the same lab processing time as original aligners. Many Invisalign cases include at least one round of refinements.
Why Refinements Are Sometimes Needed
Teeth do not always move exactly as the 3D simulation predicts. Biological factors — bone density, the age and vitality of surrounding tissue, compliance with wearing hours — all affect how teeth respond to the aligners. Complex movements, especially rotation and extrusion, are more difficult to achieve predictably. If your teeth have not fully tracked to where they should be, refinements correct the discrepancy.
Are Refinements Included in the Cost?
This depends on the Invisalign package your provider offers. Comprehensive Invisalign plans often include unlimited refinements within a certain time period. Lite and Express packages typically include fewer or no included refinements. Before starting treatment, clarify with your provider exactly what is included and what would cost extra. How to Minimize the Need for Refinements
The single most important factor in achieving your planned result is wearing your aligners for the prescribed 20-22 hours per day. Skipping wear time causes tracking problems that accumulate across aligner sets. Attending all scheduled check-up appointments is equally important — your dentist monitors tracking and can catch issues early. When refinements are needed, they are a normal and expected part of comprehensive Invisalign treatment, not a failure.
