Porcelain Veneers vs. Cosmetic Bonding: Key Differences

If you want to improve the appearance of your smile, two popular options are porcelain veneers and cosmetic bonding. Both can address chips, cracks, discolouration, and minor shape issues — but they are very different procedures.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of dental porcelain bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour you want. Placing veneers requires removing a small amount of enamel, making them a permanent modification.

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured composite resin directly to the tooth and sculpting it into the desired shape. In most cases, little to no enamel removal is necessary, making it a more reversible option.

Comparing the Two

Veneers are more durable, more stain resistant, and better for comprehensive smile makeovers, lasting 10-20 years. Bonding is faster (often done in a single visit), less expensive, and requires less enamel removal — but is more prone to staining with a typical lifespan of 5-7 years.

Which Is Right for You?

For minor corrections, bonding is an excellent, economical choice. For a more dramatic transformation or longer-lasting results, veneers are worth the investment. Our Calgary cosmetic dental team can help you decide.
