Pregnancy and Dental Health: What Every Mom Should Know

Pregnancy brings significant hormonal changes that can directly affect your oral health. Many women are surprised to learn that regular dental care during pregnancy is not just safe — it is recommended.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

Elevated levels of progesterone and estrogen during pregnancy increase blood flow to the gums and make them more sensitive to the bacteria in plaque. This can lead to pregnancy gingivitis — inflammation, swelling, and bleeding of the gums that affects up to 70% of pregnant women. Good oral hygiene and professional cleanings are the best prevention.

Morning Sickness and Tooth Erosion

Frequent vomiting exposes teeth to stomach acid, which can erode enamel over time. After an episode of morning sickness, rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouthwash — do not brush immediately, as this can spread the acid across more tooth surfaces. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.

Is Dental Treatment Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Routine dental care — cleanings, X-rays with proper shielding, fillings, and many other treatments — is safe during pregnancy. The second trimester is generally the most comfortable time for dental procedures. Emergency treatment should never be postponed due to pregnancy. Untreated dental infections can pose greater risks than treatment.

What to Tell Your Dentist

Always inform your dentist that you are pregnant, including how far along you are and any medications or supplements you are taking. This allows us to tailor your care appropriately. At Smileworks Dental, we are experienced in providing comfortable, safe care for pregnant patients throughout all trimesters.
