Waterpik vs. Traditional Flossing: Which Is Better?

Water flossers have become hugely popular — and for good reason. But can they actually replace traditional string flossing? Dentists have definitive opinions on this.

What Traditional Flossing Does

String flossing physically scrapes plaque and debris from between teeth and just below the gumline. The mechanical friction is highly effective at removing the biofilm that builds up in these interdental spaces — spaces a toothbrush simply cannot reach. When done correctly and consistently, flossing is the most effective way to prevent interproximal cavities and gum disease.

What a Water Flosser Does

A water flosser uses a pulsating stream of water to flush out food particles and disrupt plaque between teeth and below the gumline. Research shows that water flossers are more effective than string floss at reducing gingival bleeding and improving gum health. They are also superior for cleaning around orthodontic brackets, dental implants, bridges, and crowns where string floss is difficult to use.

The Research Finding

Studies comparing the two show that water flossers tend to produce better gum health outcomes — but they may be slightly less effective at removing plaque directly off tooth surfaces. The Canadian Dental Association notes that both are valuable tools. For patients who struggle with traditional flossing — because of limited dexterity, dental work, or simply not doing it consistently — a water flosser is an excellent alternative that they will actually use.

The Bottom Line

If you floss correctly and consistently with string floss, keep doing it. If you struggle to floss regularly or have dental work that makes it difficult, a water flosser is a highly effective alternative — and evidence suggests you will have better gum health outcomes than someone who uses string floss poorly or not at all. Many dentists recommend using both. Talk to your Smileworks Dental hygienist about what is best for your specific situation.
