What Is Dental Plaque and How Do You Get Rid of It?

Dental plaque is at the root of most common oral health problems — cavities, gum disease, and bad breath all trace back to it. Understanding what plaque is and how to control it is the most fundamental thing you can do for your dental health.

What Is Plaque?

Dental plaque is a sticky, colourless or pale yellow film of bacteria that constantly forms on the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline. It is a biofilm — a structured community of microorganisms embedded in a protective matrix they secrete. It forms continuously: within hours of brushing, bacteria begin recolonizing tooth surfaces.

Why Plaque Is Dangerous

Plaque bacteria feed on carbohydrates and produce acids that dissolve tooth enamel, leading to cavities. When plaque accumulates along the gumline and between teeth, it triggers the immune response that causes gum inflammation (gingivitis) and, if left untreated, gum disease (periodontitis). Over time, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) — which cannot be removed by brushing and requires professional scaling.

How to Remove Plaque Effectively

Brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled brush removes plaque from accessible surfaces. Flossing daily removes plaque from between teeth and just below the gumline — areas a toothbrush cannot reach. These two habits together address the vast majority of plaque accumulation. Electric toothbrushes tend to be more effective than manual for most people.

The Role of Professional Cleanings

Even perfect home care cannot reach everywhere. Areas where plaque accumulates most heavily (between back teeth, along deep gum pockets) are difficult or impossible to fully clean at home. Professional cleanings at Smileworks Dental use specialized instruments to remove both plaque and any hardened tartar that has formed. This is why regular checkups — typically every six months — are essential, not optional.
