What Is Sedation Dentistry? Options, Safety, and Who It Is For

Millions of Canadians avoid the dentist because of anxiety or fear — and dental avoidance leads to worsening oral health and more complex, expensive treatment down the line. Sedation dentistry exists to break that cycle.

What Sedation Dentistry Is (and Is Not)

Sedation dentistry does not mean you are unconscious. With the most common forms — nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation — you remain awake and able to communicate. You simply feel deeply relaxed, often drowsy, and largely disconnected from the dental environment. Many patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled through a small mask over the nose. Effects are felt within minutes — a sense of warmth, relaxation, and well-being. Nitrous wears off completely within a few minutes after the mask is removed, meaning you can drive yourself home afterward.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription anti-anxiety medication about an hour before your appointment. The effects are stronger than nitrous — most patients feel quite drowsy and may doze during longer procedures. You will need someone to drive you home.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

When administered by a properly trained dental team after a thorough review of your health history, sedation dentistry is very safe. We monitor vital signs throughout any sedated appointment. Contact Smileworks Dental to discuss whether sedation dentistry is right for your situation.
