Emergency Dental Care: We Are Here When You Need Us Most

When faced with a dental emergency, time is of the essence. At Smileworks Dental, we prioritize dental emergencies and will do our best to see you as quickly as possible. Do not wait — contact our Calgary dental office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency.

Understanding what qualifies as an emergency can help you act quickly and effectively. Dental emergencies include: severe toothache, cracked or broken tooth, knocked-out tooth, lost crown or filling, dental abscess, soft tissue injuries, and broken dental appliances.

If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If you cannot, keep it moist in milk or saliva and get to our office immediately — time is critical for saving the tooth.

Dental Emergencies

Why Quick Action Matters

Delaying treatment for a dental emergency can allow the problem to worsen significantly. What starts as a manageable issue can quickly become more painful, more complex, and more expensive to treat if left unaddressed.

Our Calgary emergency dental team is trained to provide prompt, compassionate care to relieve your pain and address the underlying issue. We will assess your situation, provide immediate relief, and develop a treatment plan to restore your smile.

When you contact us in an emergency, describe your symptoms clearly so we can prepare for your arrival. We will give you guidance over the phone on what to do while you are on your way to our clinic.

Dental Emergencies

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe toothache: Intense or persistent tooth pain is often a sign of infection or nerve involvement. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, and call us right away. Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.

Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible and bring them with you. We can often bond or crown the tooth to restore its appearance and function.

Lost crown or filling: A lost crown or filling can expose sensitive tooth structure and should be addressed promptly. As a temporary measure, dental cement (available at pharmacies) can be used to re-seat a crown. Avoid chewing on that side until we can see you.

Dental Emergencies

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I have a dental abscess? A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread if untreated. Signs include a severe, throbbing toothache, fever, facial swelling, and a pimple-like bump on the gums. Call us immediately — this is a true dental emergency requiring urgent care.

Can I go to the emergency room for a dental emergency? Hospital emergency rooms can address severe infection and pain but generally cannot perform dental procedures. For the best care, contact our Calgary dental office so our team can treat the dental issue directly.

What if my emergency happens outside of office hours? Call our office and follow the instructions on our voicemail for after-hours emergencies. We do our best to accommodate urgent situations as quickly as possible.
