Composite Resin: The Modern Standard
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured plastic and glass mixture that bonds directly to the tooth structure. It requires less tooth removal than amalgam, can be precisely colour-matched to your natural teeth, and is mercury-free. Modern composite materials are strong, durable, and suitable for most cavity sizes.
Amalgam: The Traditional Option
Dental amalgam is an alloy of mercury, silver, tin, and copper that has been used for over 150 years. It is extremely durable and less technique-sensitive than composite. However, it contains mercury (though considered safe by regulatory agencies), requires more tooth removal, expands and contracts with temperature changes, and is visibly silver.
Which Is Right for You?
For most patients today, composite is the preferred choice — it is aesthetically superior, requires less tooth reduction, and has improved significantly in durability. For very large fillings in high-stress areas (like back molars), amalgam may occasionally still be recommended for its durability. Ask your dentist about the best option for your specific case.
Should You Replace Your Old Silver Fillings?
There is generally no need to replace amalgam fillings that are in good condition and functioning properly. However, if an old filling is cracked, leaking, or failing, replacing it with tooth-coloured composite is a reasonable choice.
