TMJ Disorder: Signs, Symptoms and Treatment Options

TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD) is a condition affecting the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. It is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms can mimic other conditions.

Common Signs of TMD

Symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness (especially in the morning), a clicking or popping sound when you open your mouth, difficulty chewing, a feeling that your jaw is locked, earaches, frequent headaches, and neck and shoulder pain.

What Causes TMD?

Contributing factors may include grinding or clenching your teeth (bruxism), arthritis in the jaw joint, a misaligned bite, jaw injury, or stress that causes you to tighten facial muscles and clench your jaw.

Treatment Options

Many TMD cases resolve with conservative treatment: warm compresses, soft foods, and stress management. For teeth grinders, a custom night guard is highly effective at reducing strain on the joint. In more severe cases, physiotherapy or dental adjustments may be recommended.

When to See a Dentist

If you experience persistent jaw pain or difficulty opening and closing your mouth, it is worth having it evaluated. Your dentist can assess whether an oral appliance or other treatment would provide relief. Contact our Calgary team today.
