Many people grind or clench their teeth while sleeping without knowing it until damage appears or a partner notices the sound. Here is how to recognize the signs of bruxism and when a custom night guard is the right intervention.
Signs You May Be Grinding
Common indicators of sleep bruxism include: waking up with jaw soreness, facial muscle tension, or headaches (especially in the temples); tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure; teeth that appear flattened, worn down, chipped, or shorter than they used to be; a partner reporting grinding sounds during sleep; and indentations on the sides of your tongue or the inside of your cheek (from clenching).
What Causes Bruxism?
The causes are not completely understood, but stress and anxiety are the most significant contributors in adults. Sleep disorders (particularly sleep apnea) are strongly associated with bruxism. Caffeine, alcohol, and certain medications (especially SSRIs) can worsen nighttime grinding. Some people grind habitually without any apparent trigger.
What a Night Guard Does
A custom night guard is a thin, hard or semi-rigid oral appliance worn over the upper or lower teeth during sleep. It does not stop grinding or clenching — it provides a cushion that absorbs and distributes the forces, preventing direct tooth-to-tooth contact. The guard takes the damage instead of your enamel and restorations.
Custom vs. Store-Bought Guards
Over-the-counter boil-and-bite guards are bulky, uncomfortable, and often do not stay in place well. They can also alter the bite if worn consistently. Custom night guards are fabricated from an impression of your actual teeth — they fit precisely, are much thinner and more comfortable, and provide proper protection. Book an appointment at Smileworks Dental to have your bite assessed and get a custom guard made.
