Fluoride: What Parents Need to Know

Fluoride is one of the most evidence-based cavity-prevention tools available to dentists and parents. Yet questions and concerns about it are common. Here is what the research shows and how to use it safely for your child.

How Fluoride Protects Teeth

Fluoride works in two ways. First, it is incorporated into the structure of developing teeth, making enamel stronger and more resistant to acid attack. Second, it supports remineralization — the natural process by which enamel repairs itself after exposure to acid.

Fluoride in Toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste is the most important source of fluoride for children's teeth. Health Canada recommends: for children under 3, a rice-sized smear; for children 3-6, a pea-sized amount. Children under 6 should spit, not swallow. From age 6 on, regular adult fluoride toothpaste is appropriate.

Professional Fluoride Treatments

At dental checkups, we apply a concentrated fluoride varnish to children's teeth. This delivers a much higher dose directly to the tooth surface than toothpaste alone. It is quick, painless, and one of the most cost-effective preventive interventions in dentistry.

Dental Fluorosis

Dental fluorosis is a cosmetic condition — faint white lines or spots on enamel — caused by too much fluoride during the years when teeth are developing (before age 8). Mild fluorosis is very common, entirely harmless, and caused by swallowing excess toothpaste. Supervising toothbrushing prevents it.
