A dental crown — sometimes called a cap — is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over an existing tooth to restore its size, shape, strength, and appearance. Porcelain crowns closely mimic the look of natural teeth.
When Is a Crown Needed?
Crowns are recommended to protect a weakened or cracked tooth; to restore a severely worn tooth; to cover a tooth after root canal treatment; to hold a dental bridge in place; to cover a dental implant; or to improve the appearance of a severely discoloured tooth.
The Crown Placement Process
Getting a crown typically takes two appointments. At the first, your tooth is shaped to make room for the crown and impressions are taken. A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is crafted. At the second visit, the permanent crown is bonded in place.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With proper care, a porcelain crown can last 10-20 years or longer. Good oral hygiene, avoiding chewing on hard objects, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth will all extend the life of your crown.
Caring for Your Crown
Crowns require the same care as natural teeth — brush twice daily, floss, and maintain regular dental check-ups. While the crown itself cannot decay, the tooth underneath can still develop decay at the margin.
