Root canal treatment has an intimidating reputation — but for most patients who actually have the procedure, it is far more manageable than expected. Here is what actually happens, step by step.
Step 1: Anaesthesia
Your dentist will apply a topical numbing gel before administering a local anaesthetic. Once the area is numb, you should feel no pain during the procedure — only some pressure.
Step 2: Accessing the Pulp
A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected pulp chamber.
Step 3: Cleaning the Canals
Tiny, flexible instruments are used to remove the infected pulp and shape the canals. The canals are then flushed with an antiseptic solution to eliminate any remaining bacteria.
Step 4: Sealing and Crown
The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. At a follow-up visit, a porcelain crown is placed over the treated tooth to protect it and restore full function. With proper care, a root-canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
