Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation. In reality, it relieves the pain of an infected tooth rather than causing it. The key is recognizing the warning signs early so treatment can be simpler and more successful.

Severe or Persistent Toothache

Deep, severe tooth pain — especially pain that throbs or radiates to the jaw, face, or ear — is one of the most common signs that the pulp (nerve) inside a tooth is infected or inflamed. Unlike brief sensitivity, pulp pain tends to be intense and persistent.

Prolonged Sensitivity to Temperature

Some tooth sensitivity to hot or cold is normal, but it should resolve quickly. If sensitivity — especially to heat — lingers for 30 seconds or more after the source is removed, this often indicates nerve involvement and should be evaluated promptly.

Darkening of the Tooth

A tooth that has become visibly darker than its neighbours may have had its internal blood supply disrupted by trauma or infection. Even without pain, a darkened tooth warrants investigation.

Gum Swelling or a Pimple on the Gum

Swollen gums near a specific tooth, tenderness when pressing on the gum, or a persistent pimple-like bump on the gum (a fistula) are signs of a dental abscess. If left untreated, dental infections can spread and become medically serious. Contact Smileworks Dental in Calgary immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
