Proper aftercare following a tooth extraction is critical for a smooth, complication-free recovery. The most important goal in the first 24 hours is to protect the blood clot that forms in the socket.
First 24 Hours
Bite down on gauze for 45–60 minutes following your extraction to control bleeding. Do not rinse, spit forcefully, use a straw, or smoke for 24 hours — these activities create suction that can dislodge the clot. Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling. Rest and keep your head elevated.
What to Eat
Stick to soft foods for the first few days — yogurt, soup, smoothies, mashed potatoes, eggs. Avoid hot foods and beverages, hard or crunchy foods, seeds, and anything that could get lodged in the socket. Resume normal eating gradually as healing progresses, usually within a week.
Preventing Dry Socket
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot is prematurely dislodged or dissolves, exposing the underlying bone. It is painful and delays healing. Smokers have a significantly higher risk. Follow all post-extraction instructions carefully to minimize the risk.
Signs of Complications
Mild pain and swelling for 3–4 days is normal. Signs that something may be wrong include: increasing pain after day 3, visible bone in the socket, fever, swelling that is getting worse (not better) after 48 hours, and pus or foul taste. Call your dentist if you experience any of these. At Smileworks Dental in Calgary, we provide detailed aftercare instructions at every extraction appointment.
