The question of when to start orthodontic treatment is one of the most common concerns parents have about their children's dental development. The answer depends on the specific issue being addressed.
The Recommended Age for First Assessment
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic assessment by age 7 — before all permanent teeth have erupted. At this stage, a dentist or orthodontist can identify jaw growth problems, severe crowding, and bite issues that are best treated early.
Phase 1 Treatment (Ages 7–10)
Some issues benefit from early (Phase 1) intervention — particularly skeletal problems like crossbites, underbites, or severely overcrowded jaws. Phase 1 treatment uses expanders or partial braces to create space or guide jaw growth. This does not replace full orthodontic treatment later, but can simplify it significantly.
Full Orthodontic Treatment (Ages 11–14)
Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment — traditional braces or Invisalign Teen — begins when most or all permanent teeth have erupted, typically between ages 11 and 14. At this age, the jaw is still growing, which can assist tooth movement.
What About Teenagers and Adults?
There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adult orthodontics is increasingly common, with Invisalign being a popular choice for working professionals. At Smileworks Dental in Calgary, we assess children at regular check-ups and refer for orthodontic evaluation when we spot early signs of misalignment.
