Yellowing teeth are one of the most common cosmetic dental concerns — and one of the most fixable. But the right solution depends on understanding what is actually causing your discolouration. Not all yellow teeth are created equal.
Surface Stains (Extrinsic Discolouration)
The most common cause of yellow teeth is surface staining from food and drink. Coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and soy sauce all contain chromogens — intensely pigmented molecules that bind to tooth enamel. Tobacco is one of the worst offenders. Surface stains respond very well to professional whitening.
Aging and Enamel Thinning
As we age, the outer enamel layer naturally thins. The inner layer of the tooth (dentin) is naturally yellow — and as enamel wears away, this yellow shows through more prominently. Age-related yellowing does not respond to whitening as dramatically as staining does, though it still improves.
Intrinsic Discolouration
Some discolouration originates from inside the tooth. This can result from certain medications taken during tooth development (especially tetracycline antibiotics), excessive fluoride during childhood, or trauma to a tooth. Intrinsic staining does not respond to whitening and usually requires veneers or bonding.
Treatment Options
Professional teeth whitening is the most effective approach for extrinsic staining — far more powerful and longer-lasting than over-the-counter products. For intrinsic staining, porcelain veneers or cosmetic bonding can create a dramatically whiter result. Book a consultation at Smileworks Dental to find out which option is right for you.
