Visiting a dental practice for the first time can feel uncertain — especially if it has been a while since your last appointment. Here is exactly what happens at a new patient visit at Smileworks Dental in Calgary.
Before Your Appointment
We will ask you to complete a health history form before or at your first visit. This covers your medical history, current medications, allergies, and any dental concerns. Being thorough and accurate is important — many medical conditions and medications affect dental care. If you have dental anxiety, let us know when booking so we can ensure your appointment is scheduled with extra time and patience.
The Examination
Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive oral examination that includes: assessment of your gum health (probing depths, gum recession, bleeding points), visual examination of every tooth surface for cavities, cracks, and wear, examination of existing restorations, bite assessment, oral cancer screening of the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat, and a review of your X-rays. This thorough baseline assessment is what allows us to identify concerns early.
X-Rays
Most new patients will have a comprehensive set of X-rays taken. Dental X-rays reveal cavities between teeth, bone levels, root structure, impacted teeth, and conditions not visible to the naked eye. We use digital X-ray technology, which significantly reduces radiation exposure compared to traditional film X-rays. If you have recent X-rays from a previous dentist, bring them — we may be able to use them.
The Cleaning and Discussion
Your hygienist will perform a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. At the end of your appointment, we take the time to discuss our findings, explain any concerns, and present all available treatment options clearly — so you can make informed decisions without feeling pressured. New patients are always welcome at Smileworks Dental in Calgary, Tuesday through Saturday. Book your appointment today.
