When Should Kids Start Flossing?

Flossing is just as important for children as it is for adults. Primary teeth with cavities between them can affect the health and spacing of the permanent teeth that follow. Here is when to start and how to make it a habit that sticks.

When to Start

Flossing should begin as soon as two teeth touch each other — typically around age 2-3. Before that, there are no contact points where food can become trapped. Once teeth are in contact, bacteria and food can accumulate in spaces that a toothbrush cannot reach, and decay can begin.

Who Should Be Flossing — Parent or Child?

Parents should do the flossing for their children until around age 7-8, when children have the manual dexterity to do it independently. Even after children can floss themselves, periodic supervision is helpful to ensure they are actually reaching between all teeth.

Making It Easier

Floss picks or Y-shaped flossers are much easier for parents to use in a child's mouth than traditional string floss. Water flossers are also an option for older children, particularly for those with braces or orthodontic appliances.

Making It a Habit

The best time to floss is right before bed after the final brushing of the day. Making it part of the bedtime routine — rather than an optional extra — is the most effective way to establish the habit. Ask our team at Smileworks Dental for age-appropriate tips at your child's next appointment.
