Getting Ready for Summer Smiles

It’s the May long weekend, another reason to smile. Hopefully the weather will be outdoor worthy…it is Canada.Tips to keep your smiles bright and healthy while you’re playing.

Protect The Smile Too

It is great to finally be outside enjoying the summer activities again. At the beginning of the season, even riding a bike can be wobbly with children getting a new and bigger bike. Helmets protect the head, but what is protecting your teeth. Mouth guards are available over the counter from sports or drug stores, or you can have a custom mouth guard made for you from your dentist.

Smile Worthy Treats

Summertime is full of wonderful things to eat and everyone loves a treat on a hot day. Some treats can be tough on your teeth though. Sticky or hard treats like candy apples or hard candies can loosen teeth or even cause them to chip or break. Some treats that are sticky like chewy candies or pastries can get stuck to teeth and cause cavities over time if they’re not removed. Some tooth friendly, and delicious, options are watermelon, vegetables and dip, apple and orange slices, frozen juice popsicles, and cubes of cheese.

Brushing on the Go

Often it’s hard to think about your teeth when you’re out and having fun in the summer. But you can take a few easy things along with you and make your own portable tooth brushing station anywhere. A few bottles of water for rinsing (and spitting!), a disposable toothbrush that’s pre-loaded with toothpaste, dental floss sticks, and facial wipes or napkins for clean up afterwards. You can brush your teeth without toothpaste, but you will miss the fresh feeling that the minty paste provides.

Have a terrific time this summer, and keep your smiles working for you!
