Working Your Mature Smile

As we mature, our smile can begin to show signs of wear. Just like we do regular upkeep on all of our other prized possessions, we need to give our teeth some ongoing care to keep our smiles bright and youthful.

Here are some things that you can do to keep your pearly whites beautiful and healthy:

  • Keep yourself and your smile hydrated to prevent a dry mouth which can cause unsightly discoloration to your teeth
    • You can use sugar-free gum or hard candies to moisten your mouth
    • Sip water all the time, even when you’re not thirsty!
    • Ask your dentist for more ideas if your dry mouth is severe
  • Be mindful of drinks and foods that are acidic (orange juice, coffee, black tea)
  • because over time they can break down tooth enamel
  • “Pucker lines” or other wrinkles can be caused by drinking through straws or smoking

These steps can help you to avoid or lessen receding gums, dry mouth and cavities. And, remember to book regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist to keep your smile working for you!
